Ingredients

For the Meatballs

  • pounds ground beef - or mix with Italian sausage
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs - plain or Italian-style
  • ¼ cup parmesan cheese - freshly grated
  • 1 egg lightly beaten
  • 2 cloves garlic - minced
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon salt - adjust to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

For the Pasta & Sauce

  • 1 pound spaghetti noodles - cooked al dente
  • 4 cups marinara sauce - homemade or jarred
  • 1 can 14 oz diced tomatoes - undrained
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil - for sautéing
  • ½ onion finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic - minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh basil - chopped plus more for garnish

Cheese Layers

  • 1 cup cheddar cheese - shredded
  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese - shredded
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • ½ cup parmesan cheese - grated

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  • Mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, parmesan, egg, garlic, and seasoning. Roll into meatballs and bake for 20 minutes until browned.
  • Cook spaghetti until al dente. In a skillet, sauté onion and garlic, then stir in marinara, diced tomatoes, and tomato paste. Simmer 10 minutes.

  • add meatballs to sauce and toss with cooked pasta until coated.
  • Layer pasta mixture with ricotta, mozzarella, and parmesan in a casserole dish. Bake at 375°F for 30–40 minutes until bubbly and golden. Rest 10 minutes before serving.
